J.G. Ballard (1930-2009) was a British author whose work spans science fiction, dystopian fiction, and literary experimentation. Born in Shanghai, he spent part of his childhood in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, an experience that shaped his autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun (1984), later adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg.
His earlier novels, including The Drowned World (1962) and The Crystal World (1966), are ecological disaster stories. In the 1970s he wrote the controversial Crash (1973) and the dystopian High-Rise (1975). He was also a prolific short story writer, with 18 collections spanning his career. His work has had a lasting influence on science fiction, and the adjective “Ballardian” entered the dictionary to describe bleak, modern, man-made landscapes.
