Jennifer Steil is an American author who has spent much of her adult life abroad. In 2006 she moved to Yemen to become editor-in-chief of the Yemen Observer, an experience she chronicled in her memoir The Woman Who Fell from the Sky (2010). The book received praise from The New York Times, Newsweek, and the Sydney Morning Herald.
Her first novel, The Ambassador’s Wife (2015), drew on her own experiences living overseas and won the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition for Best Novel. Her second novel, Exile Music (2020), tells the story of Jewish musicians who flee Vienna in 1939 and find refuge in the Bolivian Andes.
