Jennifer Mathieu is a Texas-based young adult author who writes about teenagers dealing with real social issues. Her novels tackle subjects including slut-shaming, religious fundamentalism, school activism, and family trauma. Moxie (2017), about a girl who starts an anonymous feminist zine at her high school, became her most well-known book after Amy Poehler adapted it into a Netflix film.
Mathieu’s eight novels, published between 2014 and 2024, share a focus on young people questioning the systems around them. The Truth About Alice examines how rumors destroy a girl’s reputation, Devoted follows a teenager leaving a fundamentalist Christian community, and Bad Girls Never Say Die reimagines The Outsiders with an all-female cast in 1960s Houston. Her writing is direct and empathetic, giving voice to characters who are often overlooked or misjudged.
