Jennifer Giesbrecht made her mark with a single novella that punches well above its page count. The Monster of Elendhaven is set in a cursed, decaying port city and follows two deeply unsettling characters — a deathless monster and the aristocratic magician who gives him a purpose. The book is gothic, queer, and gleefully dark, with prose that revels in the grotesque.
The novella appeared on several best-of lists in 2019 and earned Giesbrecht a reputation for atmospheric, morally black storytelling. Her contribution to the Imaginarium 3 anthology preceded the novella and hinted at the same dark sensibility.
