Jeffrey A. Carver is an American science fiction author who has been writing since the mid-1970s. He is best known for the Star Rigger universe, where pilots navigate a dreamlike hyperspace called the Flux, and for the Chaos Chronicles, a first-contact saga that begins on Neptune’s moon Triton. He holds a degree from Brown University and studied with science fiction writer and editor James Gunn at the University of Kansas.

Carver’s work tends toward hard science fiction with a strong sense of wonder. The Star Rigger series, which started with Seas of Ernathe in 1976, explores the bond between human pilots and the alien landscapes they traverse during faster-than-light travel. His Chaos Chronicles books follow surveyor John Bandicut through encounters with alien minds and ancient technologies. He also contributed to the Battlestar Galactica novelization line and wrote books in Roger Zelazny’s Alien Speedway shared universe during the late 1980s.

In the 2010s, Carver released several short stories and collections as individual ebooks, making much of his backlist available digitally for the first time. He returned to the Chaos Chronicles after a long gap with The Reefs of Time and Crucible of Time, both published in 2019, giving longtime fans a continuation of the story that had been on hold since 2008’s Sunborn.
