Jay d’Lacey is the author of The Last Dragon Chronicles, a seven-book fantasy series for children that ran from 2001 to 2012. The series begins with The Fire Within, in which a college student named David Rain moves into a boarding house where the landlady’s daughter makes clay dragons that seem to have a life of their own. What starts as a small domestic story expands into an epic fantasy involving the nature of fire, the history of dragons, and the connection between imagination and reality.
The series grew more ambitious with each installment, moving from the intimate setting of the boarding house to cosmic-scale conflicts by the time of The Fire Ascending (2012). A companion nonfiction book, Rain & Fire (2010), explores the background and mythology behind the series. The Last Dragon Chronicles developed a strong following among middle-grade readers, particularly in the UK.
