Jas Hammonds is a YA author who was raised across many cities and has received support for their writing from Lambda Literary, Baldwin for the Arts, and the Highlights Foundation. They are also a recipient of the MacDowell James Baldwin Fellowship.
Their debut novel, We Deserve Monuments, follows Avery, a queer, biracial teenager whose family moves to a small Southern town after learning her grandmother has cancer. The story weaves together family secrets, a slow-burn romance, and a mystery involving an unsolved murder, all while exploring how racial violence echoes across generations. The book won the 2023 Coretta Scott King John Steptoe Award for New Talent and was recognized on multiple best-of-the-year lists.
Hammonds’s second novel, Thirsty, was published in 2024. Both books deal with identity, community, and the experiences of young Black and queer characters in contemporary America.
