James Mace wrote the initial draft of Soldier of Rome: The Legionary while deployed with the U.S. Army in Iraq in 2004. Writing about Ancient Rome was a form of escapism during his service, and it became a career. He has since published over 35 books of historical fiction, most of them set in the Roman Empire.
His largest body of work follows the Artorius family across generations. The Artorian Chronicles (7 books) traces Titus Artorius Justus from a young legionary avenging his brother’s death at the Battle of Teutoburger Wald through his rise to master centurion. The Artorian Dynasty (15 books) continues with his descendants through the reigns of the Flavian and later emperors. Connected series cover The Great Jewish Revolt (3 books) and The Year of the Four Emperors (2 books), all forming a continuous Roman timeline from 9 AD to the 130s.
Beyond Rome, Mace has written about the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 (5 books), the Napoleonic Wars (several standalones), and most recently the Jacobite Uprising of 1745 with Crimson Empire. He also works as a Research Historian and Script Writer for the YouTube channel Redcoat History.
