James Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882 and grew up in a large, financially unstable family. He studied languages at University College Dublin and left Ireland in 1904 with Nora Barnacle, who became his lifelong partner. They lived primarily in Trieste, Zurich, and Paris, though Dublin remained the setting for nearly all of his fiction.

Joyce published Dubliners in 1914 after years of delays caused by publishers nervous about its frank content. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man followed in 1916, and Ulysses appeared in 1922, published by Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris. Ulysses was banned in the United States and United Kingdom for over a decade due to obscenity concerns. His final novel, Finnegans Wake (1939), pushed language itself to its limits. Joyce died in Zurich in 1941 at the age of 58. He is now considered one of the most important writers in the English language.
