James Howard Kunstler has been writing since the late 1970s, starting with The Wampanaki Tales in 1979 and following it with a string of standalone novels through the 1980s, including A Clown in the Moonlight, Blood Solstice, and The Halloween Ball. His fiction output during that decade leaned toward atmospheric, character-driven stories. He then shifted toward non-fiction in the 1990s with The Geography of Nowhere (1993) and Home from Nowhere (1996), both concerned with American landscapes and urban planning. The Long Emergency (2003) and Too Much Magic (2012) continued in that vein, examining technology, energy, and societal fragility.

His World Made by Hand series (2007-2016) blends his interest in post-industrial futures with fiction, following a small community after civilization’s collapse across four novels. The Jeff Greenaway series, starting with A Christmas Orphan in 2010, collects a separate group of stories, and he has also written children’s non-fiction about American folk figures like Johnny Appleseed, Davy Crockett, and Annie Oakley. With 35 books across seven series and a publishing span of over four decades, Kunstler’s work moves freely between fiction, social criticism, and post-apocalyptic storytelling.
