Jack Du Brul broke onto the thriller scene in 1998 with Vulcan’s Forge, introducing Philip Mercer, a mining engineer whose expertise in geology and explosives makes him an unlikely but effective action hero. Over eight novels, Du Brul sent Mercer across some of the world’s most remote and dangerous locations, from arctic ice sheets to African deserts, crafting fast-paced plots that put real-world geology and geopolitics at the center of the action.
His collaboration with Clive Cussler produced two long-running series. The Isaac Bell Adventures follow a Van Dorn Agency detective working cases across early twentieth-century America, while the Oregon Files center on Juan Cabrillo and his crew of former intelligence operatives working missions aboard a ship that looks like a rust-bucket freighter but hides cutting-edge technology. Both series blend historical detail with the kind of non-stop action that Cussler made famous.
After Cussler’s death in 2020, Du Brul took over both series as sole author, continuing them through 2025. Readers who enjoy globe-spanning action with technically grounded plots will find a consistent and satisfying body of work across all three series.
