Henning Mankell published 60 books across twelve series between 1990 and 2020, working in children’s fiction, non-fiction, and crime fiction. The Kurt Wallander series is by far his largest body of work, with over a dozen entries starting from Faceless Killers in 1991 and running through An Event in Autumn in 2014. Many of those titles appear in multiple language editions on this page, reflecting Mankell’s international readership. A related Kurt Wallander Collections series gathers some of the same titles, and the Linda Wallander series follows a different character in the same world.

Beyond the Wallander books, Mankell wrote the Joel Gustafsson series for younger readers, beginning with A Bridge to the Stars in 1990, the Sofia Alface trilogy (Secrets in the Fire, Playing with Fire, The Fury in the Fire), and the Fredrik Welin duology. His standalone novels span a wide range, from The Eye of the Leopard in 1990 to The Rock Blaster in 2020, and titles like Kennedy’s Brain and The Man from Beijing show his willingness to move between settings and subjects. The non-fiction title Quicksand and the memoir-like I Die, But the Memory Lives On round out a catalog that covers far more ground than the crime fiction he is best known for.
