Helen McGinn spent nearly a decade working as a supermarket wine buyer at Tesco before launching her blog, The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club, in 2009. The blog started as a way to help friends and family pick wines at the supermarket, and it grew into an award-winning site that led to her first book deal. She won Online Drink Writer of the Year at the inaugural Fortnum & Mason Food & Drink Awards in 2013. She is also a regular drinks expert on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen and ITV’s This Morning, and writes a column for the Daily Mail.
Her non-fiction books cover wine, cocktails, and alcohol-free drinks. The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club became a bestseller and was followed by guides on teetotal drinks and homemade cocktails. Each book keeps the same approachable tone that made her blog popular, aimed at people who want to enjoy good drinks without needing specialist knowledge.
In 2021, McGinn moved into fiction with This Changes Everything, a novel about first love and second chances set in Rome. She has since published three more novels with Boldwood Books, all contemporary women’s fiction featuring stories of family, relationships, and fresh starts. The Island of Dreams (2024), her most recent novel, follows a woman who travels solo to a Greek island after calling off her wedding.
