Helen Humphreys was born in Kingston-on-Thames, England, in 1961 and moved to Canada as a child. She lives in Kingston, Ontario. She writes across fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, and her work often deals with love, loss, war, and the natural world.
Her novels include Leaving Earth (1997), which won the City of Toronto Book Award and was named a New York Times Notable Book, and Afterimage (2000), which won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Coventry (2008) is set during the German bombing of the English city, and The Evening Chorus (2015) follows a British soldier in a German POW camp who finds solace in birdwatching. Her nonfiction includes The Ghost Orchard (2017), about forgotten apple varieties, and And a Dog Called Fig (2022), about the writing life. She started her career as a poet, with four collections published between 1986 and 1999.
