Heather Morris spent years interviewing Holocaust survivor Lale Sokolov before publishing The Tattooist of Auschwitz in 2018. The novel tells the story of Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew who was forced to tattoo fellow prisoners at Auschwitz-Birkenau and fell in love with one of the women he marked. The book became an international bestseller translated into dozens of languages.
Morris followed up with Cilka’s Journey (2019), based on another real woman from Auschwitz, and Three Sisters (2021), which traces the lives of three Slovakian sisters through the camps and beyond. Her non-fiction work Listening Well (2022) and the standalone novel Sisters Under the Rising Sun (2023) show her continued interest in stories of survival and human connection during wartime.
