Heather Marshall is a Canadian author who writes historical fiction focused on women’s experiences during difficult periods in history. Her debut novel, Looking For Jane (2022), tells the story of three women connected across decades by the dark history of maternity homes in Canada where unwed mothers were forced to give up their babies. The book became a bestseller in Canada and brought wider attention to this largely overlooked chapter of history.
Her second novel, The Secret History of Audrey James (2024), moves to a World War II setting, following a young woman hiding a Jewish friend in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam and the secrets that surface decades later. Marshall’s third book, Liberty Street (2026), continues her focus on historical narratives about women facing extraordinary circumstances. All three of her novels are standalone stories that can be read in any order.
