Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish writer whose fairy tales have become some of the most widely read stories in world literature. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected folk tales, Andersen wrote original stories that drew on folklore traditions while adding his own imagination and emotional depth. Tales like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Snow Queen have been translated into over 125 languages and adapted countless times for stage and screen.

Andersen wrote more than 150 fairy tales over his lifetime, along with novels, plays, travel books, and an autobiography. His stories range from cheerful (Thumbelina, The Princess and the Pea) to deeply melancholic (The Little Match Girl, The Steadfast Tin Soldier). Many of his tales carry moral lessons, though they avoid being preachy, and his willingness to write unhappy endings set him apart from other fairy tale writers of his era.

Beyond the fairy tales, Andersen was also a novelist, with works like The Improvisatore and O.T. earning him recognition in Denmark before his shorter fiction made him internationally famous. His influence on children’s literature and fantasy storytelling has lasted well over a century.
