Guadalupe Nettel was born in Mexico City in 1973 and spent part of her childhood in France. She earned a PhD in linguistics from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Her fiction often returns to the body as a site of discomfort and self-discovery, beginning with her autobiographical novel The Body Where I Was Born, in which a young girl grows up with a birthmark covering the cornea of her right eye.
Her novels and stories have earned recognition across Latin America and Europe. Still Born, published in English in 2020, follows two women in their thirties who have decided not to have children, and was praised by Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux. Natural Histories, her short fiction collection published in English in 2013, explores the strangeness lurking inside everyday human behavior. Her most recent collection, The Accidentals (2025), takes its title from the ornithological term for a bird that has strayed far from its usual range. Nettel currently serves as the editor of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico’s literary magazine.
