Gregory Maguire was born in Albany, New York, in 1954. His mother died in childbirth, and he spent time in an orphanage before being raised by his father’s new family. He earned a B.A. from SUNY Albany, an M.A. from Simmons College’s children’s literature program, and a Ph.D. from Tufts University. He co-founded the nonprofit Children’s Literature New England and taught at Simmons for several years before turning to writing full-time. His first novel, The Lightning Time, was published in 1978.
Maguire is best known for revisionist retellings of classic stories. Wicked (1995) reimagines L. Frank Baum’s Oz from the Wicked Witch’s point of view and has sold over five million copies. It was adapted into a Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman in 2003, and a film directed by Jon M. Chu followed in 2024. His other adult novels include Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (a Cinderella retelling), Mirror Mirror (Snow White set in Renaissance Italy), After Alice, and Hiddensee (the origin story of the Nutcracker’s toymaker). His children’s work includes the seven-book Hamlet Chronicles series and the picture book Cress Watercress.
