Grant Naylor is the joint pen name of Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, the creators of Red Dwarf. The pair met in the late 1970s and began writing comedy together, eventually creating the Red Dwarf TV series in 1988 and novelizing their scripts into books that expanded the show’s universe.
Their first novel, Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers (1989), and its sequel, Better than Life (1990), were co-written and became bestsellers. After the writing partnership ended in the mid-1990s, each author wrote a solo Red Dwarf novel: Naylor’s Last Human (1995) and Grant’s Backwards (1996). The Grant Naylor name also appears on script books and companion volumes related to the show.
