Gordon R. Dickson was one of the most prolific science fiction and fantasy writers of the twentieth century, with 158 books across eighteen series published between 1952 and 2014. His best-known work is the Childe Cycle, a sprawling future-history series that began with Dorsai! in 1960 and continued for decades through titles like Soldier, Ask Not, The Final Encyclopedia, and Young Bleys. The cycle explores themes of human evolution and military science fiction, and its fifteen entries (including translated editions) make it the backbone of Dickson’s career.

Beyond the Childe Cycle, Dickson’s range was wide. The Dragon and the George series (1976-2000) brought him into fantasy territory with nine books following a man transformed into a dragon in medieval England. The Dilbia books offered lighter, humorous science fiction, while the Hoka series (co-authored) took a comedic approach to alien contact. He also edited the Stellar anthology series through the late 1970s and early 1980s, and contributed to dozens of other anthologies throughout his career.

Dickson’s standalone novels alone number over thirty titles, covering everything from alien first contact (The Alien Way) to post-apocalyptic survival (Wolf and Iron) to military SF (Naked to the Stars). Add in his collections, short stories, and non-fiction, and the full picture is of a writer who worked steadily for over four decades across nearly every corner of speculative fiction. His earliest anthology appearance dates to 1952, and posthumous compilations continued into 2014, giving his bibliography a span of more than sixty years.
