The Giver Quartet is a series of four connected novels by Lois Lowry that began with The Giver in 1993. That first book, set in a seemingly perfect community that has eliminated pain and conflict by converting to “Sameness,” won the Newbery Medal and became one of the most assigned novels in American schools. It follows a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas who is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, discovering the dark truths behind his community’s apparent utopia.
The subsequent books, Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004), and Son (2012), expand the world beyond Jonas’s community. Each follows a different protagonist in a different setting, though connections between the stories gradually emerge. The quartet explores questions about memory, free will, and the costs a society pays for stability.
