Giles Kristian was born in Leicestershire to a Norwegian mother and English father. Before becoming a novelist, he was the lead singer of the 1990s UK pop group Upside Down, selected from 8,000 applicants, and later worked as a copywriter. His Norwegian heritage and admiration for Bernard Cornwell led him to historical fiction.
His debut, Blood Eye (2009), launched the Raven trilogy, a Viking coming-of-age story that earned praise from Cornwell himself. He followed it with the English Civil War duology Bleeding Land, then returned to the Viking age with The Rise of Sigurd. His Arthurian Tales, starting with Lancelot (2018), retell the legends in his grounded, visceral style. He also co-authored Golden Lion (2015) with Wilbur Smith, beginning a long collaboration with the Courtney adventure series that continued after Smith’s death in 2021.
