George O’Connor is a Brooklyn-based author, cartoonist, and illustrator who has spent much of his career bringing ancient mythology to life through comics. His biggest project, the Olympians series, ran for 12 volumes between 2010 and 2022, with each book devoted to one of the Greek gods. O’Connor drew heavily from primary sources when writing these books, treating the original myths with respect while packaging them in a visual style full of action and energy that appeals to younger readers.
Before Olympians, O’Connor published the graphic novel Journey into Mohawk Country in 2006, which adapted the 1634 journal of Dutch explorer Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert. He also illustrated Ball Peen Hammer, a graphic novel written by playwright Adam Rapp. His picture books include the New York Times bestseller Kapow!, along with Ker-Splash!, Sally and the Some-Thing, If I Had a Raptor, and If I Had a Triceratops.
With the Olympians complete, O’Connor turned to Norse mythology for his Asgardians series, which began in 2024 with a volume on Odin. His work stands out for how seriously it treats its source material. Rather than watering down the myths for kids, he finds ways to present the strangeness and drama of ancient stories in a form that feels honest and accessible at the same time.
