Garrett M. Graff has spent his career writing about the hidden machinery of American government and the people who operate it. His first book, The First Campaign (2007), examined how the internet was changing politics. He followed it with The Threat Matrix (2011), a history of the FBI’s transformation after 9/11, and Raven Rock (2017), which revealed the U.S. government’s secret doomsday plans during the Cold War.
His biggest commercial success came with The Only Plane in the Sky (2019), an oral history of September 11 that became a bestseller. Since then, Graff has continued writing narrative non-fiction on major American events, including Watergate (2022), a fresh history of the scandal, and When the Sea Came Alive (2024), an oral history of D-Day. His work draws on extensive archival research and firsthand interviews.
