Gardner Francis Fox trained as a lawyer but spent most of his career writing, producing an enormous volume of work across comics, pulp magazines, and novels. At DC Comics he was involved in creating or co-creating characters that became central to the publisher’s history, including founding the Justice League of America in 1960. His comic book output alone ran to thousands of scripts over three decades.

His prose novels came out of the sword and sorcery boom of the 1960s and 1970s. The Kothar books follow a mercenary barbarian through adventures involving sorcery and ancient powers, clearly drawing on the same tradition as Conan the Barbarian. Fox had a fast, direct style suited to both comics and pulp fiction, and his novels deliver straightforward action without much pause for reflection.

The books listed here are posthumous reprints issued from 2017 onward, making his out-of-print work available to new readers. Fox died in 1986, but his influence on superhero comics in particular remained visible long after his death.
