Gabino Iglesias is a Puerto Rican author, editor, and book critic based in Austin, Texas. He writes what he calls barrio noir — fiction that blends horror, crime, and magical realism with the lived experiences of Latinx communities. His novels are bilingual, mixing English and Spanish in a way that feels natural rather than decorative, and they deal head-on with poverty, violence, immigration, and the supernatural.
His early work came through the indie press world. Zero Saints (2015) and Coyote Songs (2018) were published by Broken River Books and built his reputation among horror and crime fiction readers. The Devil Takes You Home (2022) brought him to a wider audience through Mulholland Books. It follows a man who becomes a contract killer to pay his daughter’s medical bills and ends up on a doomed cartel heist that spirals into supernatural horror. The book won the Bram Stoker Award and the Shirley Jackson Award, and was nominated for the Edgar and Locus Awards.
Outside of fiction, Iglesias is one of the most active book critics in the genre space. He reviews regularly for NPR and became the horror fiction columnist for the New York Times Book Review in 2024. His most recent novel, House of Bone and Rain (2024), follows five teenagers in Puerto Rico seeking revenge after one of their mothers is murdered.
