Gabby Noone writes YA fiction with a distinctly offbeat sensibility. Her debut, Layoverland (2020), sends its protagonist to a purgatory that resembles an airport where the recently deceased must help others before moving on. It’s an oddball concept, but Noone handles it with both humour and heart. Her follow-up, Live, Laugh, Kidnap (2022), turns its satirical attention to wellness culture and teenage social dynamics, again finding comedy and meaning in an unlikely scenario.
Readers who are drawn to YA that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still has something to say, will find a lot to enjoy in Noone’s work. She has a sharp eye for the absurdities of modern life and a genuine sympathy for the awkwardness of being young, which makes her books feel both funny and grounded at the same time.
