Frank Herbert spent six years researching and writing Dune. It was rejected by 23 publishers before Chilton, a company known for auto repair manuals, agreed to publish it in 1965. The book won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, the first novel to do so.

Herbert was a journalist and ecological consultant in the Pacific Northwest before he became a novelist. His interest in desert ecology, religion, and politics merged in Dune, which imagines a future where control of a desert planet determines the fate of an interstellar empire. The spice melange, found only on Arrakis, enables space travel and extends life. Whoever controls the spice controls everything.

The book sold slowly at first, building an audience through word of mouth over years rather than months. It became the bestselling science fiction novel of all time. Herbert wrote five sequels, each stranger and more philosophical than the last. The later books alienate some readers while rewarding others who appreciate Herbert’s willingness to follow ideas wherever they lead.

Herbert died in 1986. His son Brian Herbert and author Kevin J. Anderson have since written numerous prequels and sequels based on Frank’s notes. These books have their detractors, but they’ve also introduced the universe to readers who might not otherwise encounter it.

Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptations in 2021 and 2024 finally gave Dune the cinematic treatment it had long been denied. David Lynch’s 1984 attempt had famously disappointed both audiences and Lynch himself.
