Fauna Hodel is the author of One Day She’ll Darken (2008), a memoir that traces her discovery of her family’s connection to one of the most famous unsolved murders in American history. Hodel was given up for adoption as an infant and raised by a Black family in Sparks, Nevada, unaware of her biological parents’ identities.
As an adult, she learned that her grandfather was George Hodel, a prominent Los Angeles doctor and the prime suspect in the 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short, known as the Black Dahlia. The book follows her search for the truth about her family. One Day She’ll Darken was adapted into the six-episode TNT series I Am the Night (2019), directed by Patty Jenkins.
