Emily Varga is a Canadian author and family lawyer who published her debut novel, For She Is Wrath, in 2024. The book is a sweeping Pakistani fantasy retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo in which a young woman seeks revenge against those who betrayed her and the boy she used to love. It became an instant indie bestseller, received a Goodreads Choice nomination, and was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
The River She Became, published in 2025, continues her career in romantasy. It follows a relic-hunter searching for an ancient fae object in a world where magic is fading, with the same action-driven plotting and romantic tension that drove her debut.
Varga has lived in England, Scotland, and Australia and now lives in western Canada. She works as a family lawyer alongside her writing career, which perhaps explains a facility for plots built around injustice, power imbalances, and consequences.
