Emilie Baker Loring (1866-1951) was an American romance novelist whose books remained popular for decades, selling millions of copies. Born in Boston to George M. Baker, a playwright and publisher, Loring grew up in a literary household. She married lawyer Victor J. Loring and did not publish her first novel, The Trail of Conflict, until 1922, when she was already in her mid-fifties. Despite the late start, she produced a steady stream of novels over the next three decades.
Loring’s books typically feature independent young women who find themselves in tricky situations and are aided by capable, appealing men. Romance is always central, but her stories also incorporate elements of mystery, suspense, and patriotism. Her writing reflected an optimistic worldview, and she often set her stories in New England. After her death in 1951, her sons arranged for twenty additional novels to be published under her name, ghostwritten by Elinore Denniston, bringing the total to fifty books. These posthumous titles maintained the style and tone Loring’s readers expected, and her novels continued to sell well into the 1970s.
