Edward Underhill is a queer trans author who grew up in suburban Wisconsin. By day he writes music and by night he writes stories, a dual creative life that shows up in his debut novel Always the Almost (2023), which follows a trans pianist competing at a regional competition while falling for a new boy. The book earned praise for its warm humor and its matter-of-fact portrayal of trans teen life.
His follow-up, This Day Changes Everything (2024), is another YA novel, while The In-Between Bookstore (2025) marked his move into adult fiction. Underhill’s books are known for centering queer and trans characters in stories where their identity is present but not the sole source of conflict — his characters also deal with ambition, family expectations, and the ordinary messiness of growing up.
