Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809, raised in Richmond, Virginia, by the Allan family after his mother’s death, and died in Baltimore in 1849 at the age of forty. In his short life he wrote some of the most recognizable works in American literature, from The Raven and The Tell-Tale Heart to The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Poe invented the detective story with his C. Auguste Dupin tales and wrote the only novel-length work of his career, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838). He also worked as a literary editor and critic, earning a reputation for harsh but sharp reviews of his contemporaries. His influence stretches across horror, mystery, science fiction, and poetry, and his work continues to appear in anthologies, collections, and adaptations nearly two centuries after his death.
