Eden Robinson is a Haisla/Heiltsuk writer from British Columbia whose work draws on Indigenous experience and mythology. Her debut, Traplines (1996), is a short story collection that announced a distinctive voice in Canadian fiction, with stories about young people in difficult circumstances told without sentimentality. Monkey Beach (2000), her first novel, follows a young Haisla woman on the coast of British Columbia as she reckons with the disappearance of her brother and her own connection to the spirit world.
The Trickster trilogy is Robinson’s most ambitious work. Son of a Trickster (2017), Trickster Drift (2018), and Return of the Trickster (2021) follow Jared, a teenager in Kitimat, British Columbia, whose life is complicated by family dysfunction, addiction, and the fact that his grandmother might actually be a shape-shifting river otter from Haisla mythology. The series mixes realism with the supernatural in a way that reflects how these elements coexist in Indigenous storytelling. Blood Sports (2006) is a darker standalone novel about the drug trade in Vancouver, and Remember You Will Die (2024) is her most recent work.
