Dreda Say Mitchell grew up on a housing estate in the East End of London to parents from Grenada. She studied African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies and later earned a master’s degree in education from the University of North London. Her writing career began on a creative writing course at the Groucho Club in Soho, where she started drafting her debut novel Running Hot.

Published in 2004, Running Hot won the CWA John Creasey Dagger the following year, making Mitchell the first Black British author to win the prize. Her books draw on the communities she grew up in, often set among the tower blocks and streets of East London. The Gangland Girls trilogy became a number-one crime series on Amazon UK, and her work has been translated into 14 languages.

Mitchell also works as a broadcaster and cultural commentator. She has presented BBC Radio 4’s Open Book and BBC Radio 3’s The Sunday Feature. In 2022, she was selected as one of twelve contemporary female crime writers to contribute to a new Miss Marple anthology alongside Val McDermid and Kate Mosse.
