Donald Jack was a Canadian author born in England who became one of Canada’s most celebrated comic writers. He is best known for The Bandy Papers, a nine-book series following the adventures of Bartholomew Wolfe Bandy, a bumbling but oddly successful Canadian aviator who stumbles his way through World War I, World War II, and the decades between them. The series began with Three Cheers for Me in 1962 and ended with Stalin vs. Me in 2005.
Jack won the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour three times, a record that still stands. His non-fiction work includes Rogues, Rebels and Geniuses, a book about the history of Canadian theatre, and Sinc, Betty, And The Morning Man, about his experiences in broadcasting. He also wrote The Canvas Barricade, a play published in 2007. Though Jack’s output was modest in volume, The Bandy Papers earned him a loyal readership that kept the series in print for over four decades.
