Don Winslow is an American crime writer whose novels are known for their ambitious scope and meticulous research. His career spans from the early 1990s through his announced retirement in 2024, with books ranging from breezy surf noir to epic-scale drug war sagas. The Power of the Dog trilogy, his most celebrated work, follows the intertwined stories of DEA agents and cartel leaders across decades of the US-Mexico drug conflict.

Winslow’s other notable works include the Savages duology, which became an Oliver Stone film, and the Neal Carey private investigator series that launched his career. The Danny Ryan trilogy (City on Fire, City of Dreams, City in Ruins) reimagines classic gangster narratives in an American setting. He also wrote well-regarded standalones like The Force, about a corrupt NYPD detective, and The Winter of Frankie Machine, about a retired mob hitman.

Before becoming a full-time novelist, Winslow worked as a private investigator, safari guide, and movie theater manager, among other jobs.
