Don Bentley served as an Army Apache helicopter pilot and FBI special agent before writing thrillers. He flew combat missions in Afghanistan and worked counterterrorism cases for the Bureau. When he writes about military operations and intelligence work, he’s drawing on direct experience.
His first novel, Without Sanction, introduced Matt Drake, a Defense Intelligence Agency operative dealing with ISIS in Syria. The book launched in 2020 and was praised for its authenticity. Bentley’s combat experience gives his action scenes a weight that purely researched fiction sometimes lacks. He knows what it feels like.
Bentley was recruited to write in the Tom Clancy universe, contributing Jack Ryan Jr. novels alongside established Clancy authors. He was also selected as one of the writers continuing the Mitch Rapp series after Kyle Mills stepped back. His first Rapp novel, Capture or Kill, appeared in 2024.
Managing multiple series requires careful scheduling. Bentley outlines extensively and writes quickly when drafting, a necessity given his output. He balances the demands of inherited franchises against developing his own Matt Drake series.
Bentley lives in Texas with his family. He still holds his helicopter pilot’s license and occasionally flies when not writing. His military and law enforcement background gives him credibility in a genre where readers pay attention to technical details. Mistakes get noticed. Bentley makes fewer than most.
