A.A. Dhand created DI Harry Virdee, a British-Asian detective working the streets of Bradford in Northern England. Harry is a Sikh man who married a Muslim woman against his family’s wishes, and this personal conflict runs through every book in the series. Starting with Streets of Darkness in 2016, the six novels mix gritty crime investigation with Harry’s ongoing struggle to balance duty, family honor, and the cultural pressures bearing down on him.
Bradford itself is a major presence in these books. Dhand, who grew up there, writes the city with real familiarity, from its back streets and curry houses to its more dangerous corners. The crimes Harry investigates often involve organized gangs, racial violence, and the kind of corruption that thrives where communities are under pressure. Across the series, Harry is both an outsider within his own family and a target within the police force, making him one of the more distinctive detectives in British crime fiction.
