Debbie Rix began her career with the BBC as a newsreader on Breakfast Time, and later worked as a presenter and reporter on television. She turned to writing historical fiction with The Girl with Emerald Eyes (2015), a dual-timeline novel exploring the history of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Italy provides the setting for many of her novels. Daughters of the Silk Road follows a family of merchant explorers returning from China to Venice, while The Silk Weaver’s Wife is set in the Italian countryside. Her later books shifted toward World War II stories, including The Secret Letter, The Italian Girls, The German Wife, and The German Mother. The Telegram, her most recent novel, was published in 2024.
Rix’s books typically weave together two time periods, using present-day characters who discover connections to people and events from the past. She has published nine novels to date.
