Dean Koontz published his first novel in 1968 and has written over 100 books since then. He worked through multiple genres in his early career, writing science fiction, suspense, and horror under several pen names before settling into the thriller territory he’s known for. His novels typically blend suspense with elements of horror, science fiction, and dark humor.
The Odd Thomas series became one of his most popular creations. Odd, a short-order cook who sees the lingering dead, narrates his own adventures with warmth and self-deprecating humor. Koontz has said the character’s voice came more naturally to him than any other. The series spans eight books, concluding with Saint Odd in 2015.
His Jane Hawk series, starting with The Silent Corner (2017), follows an FBI agent investigating a conspiracy involving nanotechnology and mind control. The five-book series is faster and harder-edged than Odd Thomas, with Hawk operating as a fugitive from the government she once served.
Koontz co-wrote five novels reimagining Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in a contemporary New Orleans setting. His Nameless series, originally released as Amazon Original Stories, follows a vigilante with no memory of his past.
Koontz has sold over 500 million copies worldwide. Fourteen of his novels have reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
