David Wingrove is best known for Chung Kuo, an ambitious fiction series that ran for eight books from 1989 to 1997, beginning with The Middle Kingdom. He later returned to the setting with the Chung Kuo Recasting series, which started in 2011 with Son Of Heaven and reached twelve books by 2020. Several of the Recasting titles share names with the originals, suggesting revised or expanded versions of the earlier novels.

Beyond Chung Kuo, Wingrove wrote three books in the Myst series during the mid-1990s and a time-travel trilogy called Roads to Moscow between 2014 and 2016. His earliest publications are non-fiction, including The Immortals of Science Fiction from 1980, The Science Fiction Source Book, and the co-written Trillion Year Spree from 1986. With 30 books spanning 1980 to 2020, his career splits roughly between decades of science fiction criticism and decades of large-scale fiction projects.
