David Mitchell is a British novelist whose work resists easy categorization. His novels move between genres, time periods, and narrative structures with unusual ambition. Cloud Atlas (2004), which tells six interconnected stories spanning from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future, is probably his best-known book and was adapted into a film in 2012.
Mitchell’s other novels are equally varied: The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (2010) is a historical novel set in Edo-period Japan, Black Swan Green (2006) is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story, and Utopia Avenue (2020) follows a 1960s British rock band. What connects them, besides recurring characters and themes, is Mitchell’s restless imagination and his willingness to try something different each time.
