Darcey Bell grew up on a dairy farm in western Iowa and works as a preschool teacher in Chicago. Her debut novel, A Simple Favor, came out in 2017 and became a New York Times bestseller. The story follows a mom blogger named Stephanie whose best friend Emily vanishes without explanation, and the search for answers exposes layers of deception from multiple unreliable narrators. The book was adapted into a film in 2018, directed by Paul Feig and starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.
Bell has published four novels between 2017 and 2023, all standalone domestic thrillers. Something She’s Not Telling Us (2020) is about a woman who becomes suspicious of her brother’s new girlfriend after her daughter goes missing. Woman of the Year (2023) follows two former college friends whose toxic falling-out leads to a revenge plot twenty years later. Bell’s books share a common thread: ordinary relationships that curdle into something dangerous, told through shifting perspectives where nobody is quite who they seem.
