Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was one of the most prolific English writers of the early 18th century. He worked as a merchant, journalist, spy, and political pamphleteer before turning to fiction late in life. Robinson Crusoe, published when Defoe was nearly sixty, became a massive success and is often called the first true English novel.

Beyond his fiction, Defoe wrote hundreds of pamphlets, essays, and political tracts. His non-fiction covered everything from trade and economics to crime and the supernatural. A Journal of the Plague Year remains one of the most vivid accounts of the 1665 London plague, even though Defoe was only a child when it happened. His output was enormous, with modern scholars still debating which anonymous works can be attributed to him.
