Dana Stabenow was born and raised in Alaska, and the state’s landscape runs through almost everything she writes. She is best known for the Kate Shugak mysteries, which follow a former investigator living in a national park in the Alaskan wilderness. The series started with A Cold Day for Murder in 1992, which won an Edgar Award, and has grown to over 25 books.

Beyond the Shugak books, Stabenow has written the Liam Campbell series about an Alaska State Trooper, the Coast Guard duology, and the Eye of Isis historical mysteries set in ancient Egypt. Her Silk and Song Trilogy follows a young woman’s journey along the Silk Road in the 14th century. She also published the Star Svensdotter science fiction trilogy early in her career.

Stabenow’s writing is grounded in her deep familiarity with Alaska’s people, politics, and wilderness. Her characters deal with real issues facing remote Alaskan communities, from resource extraction disputes to tribal politics, and the books reward readers who like their mysteries with a strong sense of place.
