Curtis Chin is a writer and filmmaker based in New York whose work centers on Asian American experiences, family relationships, and identity. His writing draws heavily on his own upbringing in Detroit’s Chinatown, where his family ran a Chinese restaurant.
His most widely read work is the 2023 memoir Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant, which chronicles his childhood in the restaurant during the 1980s as Detroit went through major economic and social changes. The book covers themes of race, sexuality, and belonging with warmth and specificity. His earlier work, Local/Express (2013), also explores identity and place. Chin brings a personal, grounded voice to his writing that avoids sentimentality while remaining emotionally honest.
