Craig Thomas (1942-2011) was a Welsh thriller writer who worked as a schoolteacher before turning to fiction full time. His debut novel Rat Trap (1976) was followed by Firefox (1977), which brought him international fame and is often considered one of the first techno-thrillers. Clint Eastwood directed and starred in the 1982 film adaptation.
The Mitchell Gant novels follow American pilot Mitchell Gant through Cold War missions involving advanced military technology. Thomas also wrote the longer Kenneth Aubrey and Patrick Hyde series, which ran from 1978 to 1998. These books feature MI6 intelligence officer Sir Kenneth Aubrey and his field agent Patrick Hyde, working through espionage operations set against the political tensions of the Cold War.
Thomas published 21 novels over his career, most of them set within British intelligence. His writing combined detailed technical knowledge with suspenseful plotting, and his books sold widely in the UK and internationally.
