The Cole and Hitch series follows two Old West lawmen, Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, through a partnership that spans eleven novels. Robert B. Parker, better known for his Spenser detective novels, created the series with Appaloosa in 2005, bringing his talent for lean dialogue and male friendship to the Western genre. Parker wrote four books before his death in 2010.
Robert Knott took over the series in 2013 with Ironhorse and has continued it steadily, with books appearing every year or two. Knott has maintained the core elements Parker established: the laconic exchanges between Cole and Hitch, the frontier settings, and the mix of gunplay and moral questions that defines the series. The continuation has kept the series alive for readers who enjoy traditional Westerns with strong character dynamics.
The books have drawn comparison to classic Western fiction and film. Appaloosa was adapted into a 2008 movie starring Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen. The series offers a focused, character-driven alternative to the sprawling Western sagas of other authors, with each book telling a complete story while building the long-running partnership between its two leads.
